How does Auto coverage work?
Car insurance is a contractual agreement between you and an insurance company about your vehicle. You agree to pay a regular fee (called a premium), and in return, they promise to help cover the costs if your car gets damaged in an accident or from other causes, including but not limited to theft or vandalism.
In Alberta, there is a mandatory requirement to carry liability coverage of a minimum of $200,000, though many drivers choose higher limits for better protection.

Types of Auto Coverages:
Explore mandatory and optional coverages that protect your vehicles, drivers, and operations.
- Third Party Liability (Property damage and injury protection) covers injury or death to others and damage to their property if you’re at fault in an accident. It also includes legal defence costs if you’re sued as a result of the collision.
- Accident Benefits (Recovery benefits) provides financial support for medical care, rehabilitation, funeral expenses, and income replacement if you, your passengers, or even pedestrians are injured or killed in a collision — regardless of who is at fault.
- Direct Compensation Property Damage (also known as Not-at-fault accident protection) covers damage to your vehicle and its contents when you’re not at fault in a collision. This includes repair costs, damage to personal property inside the car, and Loss of Use benefits for alternate transportation.
In addition to the mandatory coverage, Alberta drivers can enhance their protection with optional coverages that provide added peace of mind in the face of unexpected events. Here’s a breakdown of common add-ons:
Collision Coverage: Protects your vehicle when it’s damaged in a collision with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over (also called “Upset”). It covers repair or replacement costs even if you’re at fault in the accident.
Comprehensive Coverage: Protects your vehicle from non-collision-related damage, such as theft, vandalism, fire, falling or flying objects, wildlife impacts, explosions, lightning, and weather-related damage like hail, windstorms, rising water, or even earthquakes.
Loss of Use: If your vehicle is damaged due to an insured event and is being repaired or is undrivable, this coverage helps pay for a rental vehicle or alternate transportation.
Limited Waiver of Depreciation: Protects against depreciation in the event of a total loss, allowing you to recover the original purchase price or MSRP (whichever is lower). This coverage must also be purchased within a set time frame after buying a new vehicle.
Family Protection: If you or your family are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver, this coverage ensures you receive the full compensation you’re entitled to — even if the at-fault driver lacks adequate coverage. It also applies to incidents involving you as a pedestrian.
Damage to a Non-Owned Vehicle: Planning to rent a car? This coverage protects you against physical damage to the rental. Make sure the limit you choose matches the value of the vehicle you’re renting.
Accident Forgiveness: Many insurers offer this as a way to protect your driving record from being impacted after your first at-fault accident. It’s a valuable safeguard for otherwise safe drivers.

Frequently asked questions
The cost of car insurance can vary widely depending on your personal circumstances and vehicle details. Insurance providers assess several factors to calculate your rate and ensure you're getting the most accurate price possible. These include:
The type of coverage you select and the deductible amount
Your vehicle’s year, make, and model
How you use your vehicle — for commuting, business, or personal use
Your annual driving distance
Where you live
Your driving history and the experience of any listed drivers on the policy
New drivers often face higher premiums compared to experienced drivers. The best way to get an accurate rate is to request a personalized quote based on your specific situation.
A deductible is the amount that you agree to pay for costs associated with a claim before your insurance company pays for the remaining amount.
Let’s say you have an accident and the total approved cost to repair damages is $5,000. If you chose a $500 deductible when you purchased your policy, you would need to pay for the first $500 worth of expenses, and your insurance company would cover the remaining $4,500.
We recommend reviewing your policy at least once a year, but there are certain times when you’ll need to contact your company to officially update:
- When your address has changed
- Any time you buy another vehicle
- When there’s an additional licensed driver in your household
- If you’ve changed how you use your vehicle (e.g., for business)
If you drive for a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft, it’s important to know that personal car insurance policies typically exclude coverage for ride-share driving. That’s because transporting paying passengers falls outside the standard definition of “personal use,” which usually includes errands, commuting, and recreational driving.
Personal auto insurance does not cover you while you're transporting passengers for profit. To stay protected, you’ll need specific ride-sharing coverage or an endorsement added to your policy. If you're currently a ride-share driver, or thinking about becoming one, be sure to speak with one of our representatives to make sure you have the right coverage in place for you.
